vintage 1926 Larson Maurer 551 guitar. Guitar Database. This is an example of a prewar Maurer 551 guitar with the Spruce/Brazilian rosewood tonewoods and marquetry purfling. The Brazilian has some nice figure and it is in good condition with just some minor repair work.

The prior owner Keith has this to say about the guitar: “This is a Larson Brothers Maurer X braced 551 model (similar to an OM size). The top is Adirondack spruce and the back and sides are beautiful Brazilian rosewood. The fingerboard and bridge are both ebony. The tuners are the reverse gear style.

I don’t see any number markings anywhere on the instrument. Except PAT. JULY 12,1904. This guitar is in very good plus condition for it’s age. The guitar has some play wear from over the years.

The guitar has been very nicely refinished on the back and sides. There are a few cracks on the back that have all been nicely repaired. There are two longer cracks near the waist and a few also going vertical going toward the center.

All of those are very tight and barely go through the wood. There is a hairline crack on the heel of the neck. It looks very tight. The bridge looks like a replica replacement, but I can’t be sure. There are three filled hole on the bottom around the strap button where it looks like someone had a trapeze tailpiece.

The guitar has a killer sound for such a little guitar. The intonation is near perfection up and down the fingerboard. The strings are positioned wider so, it makes it super easy to play finger-style on it.  The neck is a large V-shape and the action is 1/8” at the 12th fret on the 6th string. The nut width is 1-15/16”. The scale is 25-1/2”. This guitar comes in it’s original case with green lining.”

This is an early 40′s 018. One of the 475 built that year, the guitar features a classic combination of spruce and mahogany in a simple trim. The style 18 was listed in 1857 and has gone on to be a popular style. Built in ’43, this guitar has the sought after Adirondack or red spruce top.

The prior owner has this to say about the guitars “This beautiful 1943 Martin 0-18 is as spectacular as they come. It is completely original, with the exception of a meticulously performed neck reset and refret. The action is low and even and the tone is beyond expectation; intimate and inspiring. It shines for fingerstyling, as well as flatpicking. This is a prime example of the true golden era of Martin Guitars.”

Vintage 1923 Martin 00-18K guitar. SN:18838. Guitar Database. This is an example of a prewar Martin 00- 18K guitar with an all Koa body construction. It is much rarer than it’s smaller single O cousin and less than a hundred are estimated to have been built. This model shares the same aesthetic specifications as the 018K but it’s larger size makes it more attractive to most players (and collectors!).

The prior owner, GuitarDesires LLC, has this to say about the guitar “here we have a an incredible 1923 Martin 00-18K solid Koa guitar in very good condition and just sounds great!  All mahogany neck slotted head instrument is one of the nicer sounding guitars we’ve had here at GuitarDesires. Warm, woody, loud, throaty, resonant, and wonderful to play, this instrument must surely be why these old Koa dudes are so prized.

And very very rare instruments to even reach the market as only about 60 were ever made and this is only 1 of the 16 made in 1923. This instrument has had a very thin professional refinish and really looks great and blacklights perfectly over the whole darn thing.  And thin enough to let the koa really sing.  Non-original ebony bridge and  I believe this instrument has been fitted with a new bone saddle and nut as well as had a pro refret (using standard T fretwire).

Vintage 1923 Martin 00-18K guitar. SN:18838. Guitar Database. It appears that the neck has been off this one and looks like the fretboard was planed down to about half it’s original thickness at some point as well.  Also the possibility of a heel repair though it does look very clean.  And though the guitar plays really nicely, there is a moderate bow when sighting down the bass side of the neck.  Best guess is that this instrument could use a new fretboard to get the neck back to perfect.

Nonetheless, the action is about 3/32 at the 12th fret and there’s no buzz or funk to be heard. There are also several small top cracks that have had old glue repairs and stable as well as a small back crack that has been cleated.  All the bracing and bridge plate are original and it looks like the pickguard brace and opposing upper bout brace could use some glue and clamp though there is no obvious rattle or buzz. And though a purist might want to tear into this thing repair wise, it really is in pretty darn good playing condition right now.  And in clean condition too as can be seen from the pictures.”

    1977 Martin D-45 guitar. SN R-248577.

This is a Brazilian D45 from the 70′s with an unusual story, I leave to the owner to tell. Suffice to say. This guitar is in excellent condition with figured Brazilian Rosewood back & sides, abalone hexagon fingerboard inlays, vertical CF Martin peghead logo, abalone trim on the top back and sides w abalone endpin in the style of the original 1969 D-45s with ivoroid binding on the neck and body edges.

The prior owner Len had this to say:”I have here a very unique Martin D-45.  The serial number is R-248577.  As you may know, Martin made a total of 235 Brazilian D-45′s in 1968 and 1969.

Here is the background of this guitar, according to information from C.F. Martin Guitars…. In 1969, the original guitar w serial number 248577 was stolen from the Martin factory and never recovered.  This for some reason came to Martin’s attention in 1977 as they were going over some records.

Martin has a policy that if a guitar is stolen or broken at the factory, they will make another w the same details and serial number to be sure there exists a guitar for all serial numbers shown. So, in 1977, 8 years later, they built this guitar w the same specs as the 1969 it replaces and gave it the same serial number, this time with an R in front of it.

So there you go, this is the last built of the 68-69 series of 235 Brazilian D-45′s.  It is now 42 years old yet in amazing condition.  There have been no repairs or overspray on the original finish. Very minor finish crack along the pickguard edge, as is common on these.  My luthier who inspected it says leave it as is, a non issue structurally”

This is an early 1940′s D28 I spotted on ebay. It still retains the herringbone purfling which was phased out in 1947 and has an Adirondack top with Brazilian rosewood back and sides.

The prior owner Gary Morris has this to say:”In 1981 I signed with Warner Brothers Records, with $3,500 of my signing money I bought this 1941/42 Herringbone at Ferettas Music in Denver, Colorado. My first gig after signing with Warner Brothers was the Rainbow Music Hall, opening for Asleep at the Wheel. I took my new/old Martin and joyfully performed.  I had a pickup installed and the only other work done on this guitar was some bracing work done by Gruhn’s in Nashville, I retired it from the road after a half dozen performances and used it in the studio. I would hope that somebody new can enjoy the same resonant sounds that I have enjoyed for almost the last 40 years.”
