Just back from a week in Fenland. Driving into the gathering darkness, the seemingly endless expanse of real low-lying land crossed by lines of regimented waterways has lost what little form the daylight earlier brought. Lacking contrast and uninterrupted by anything higher than a hedge, the shadows stimulate imagination.

So it is that in the fields some figures are still bent double. They are probably holiday-makers, "liberating" fruit from a BYO outlet. But they might instead be itinerant workers at the end of a long, long shift - far from home, a decent wage and a cold drink. It's already a humid night, with the promise of a hot day to follow.

Any time is a good time to listen to Tom's music, but right now it feels as if anything else would be misplaced. On a 'plane, Lincolnshire is a long way from the Delta. But no distance at all on a slide guitar.
