Burkitt & Burkitt | Commentary | ” Too Much Bling “
Ever wonder what you get when you cross the two above images?
Well, no need to imagine anymore. Burkitt and Burkitt, an eclectic art firm has done it for your consideration. Originally starting off by covering vehicles with gold coins, they have moved into ‘Crystal Images’. Here’s the offical description.
“This new medium uses Swarovski crystals in stunning colours with which we can create almost any picture or mural any size or in any space and achieve very high definition images.”
Well they’ve taken this concept to the guitar world by plastering ” Over forty thousand Swarovski and other fine crystals, in 20 different colours” over a 1978 Takeharu Folk Guitar. I kid you not. That’s the official description from the firm and here’s the result:
That’s almost 500 hours of work to Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Mearle Haggard and John Denver. If you thought a D45 has too much bling, this must send you into spasm.
I don’t know about you but I’m not so sure the “Takeharu Folk Guitar by the Kiso Susuki Violin Company (circa 1978)” is a sought after vintage or that the “rich melodic sound that has actually been enhanced by is crystal covering.” as claimed on the website and ebay listing is going to overwhelm me.
Maybe I’m being a grumpy traditionalist but I’m definitely not impressed with this as a musical effort. Don’t get me wrong, as an art piece it’s an achievement, it’s just that I don’t see Leo Kottke busting a gut to play this one.
Oh and I hope the boys at B&B have finished over the crystals on the neck- can you imagine playing over all of those little cut crystals……
